Lighting Naturals Efficiently, Or A Quick Light That Will Not Rip Up My Throat And Ruin My Head

Recommended Posts

so i'm going on vacation with my buddy, his brother, and their dad. we're going to pagosa springs, CO and staying in a hotel. their dad isn't to fond of our narg hobby, and more than likely won't be down with us using the kitchenette to light up the coals. we'll probably have to go out and about to find a reasonable location to smoke. I bought a MYA acrylic (i know i beat up on MYA a lot on here, but they're easily broken down for transport/concealment, and the acrylic base is a must for outdoor smoking IMO; not to mention, for $54 bucks delivered to my doorstep, it isn't a bad buy at all) especially for the trip. Of course, i'm going to get a decent hose, and a tang phunnel to slap on there (otherwise it wouldn't smoke worth a damn i don't think).

anyway, i didn't want to threadjack EvansLight about the ql's. anyway, are there any natural coal users who have some crazy-easy way to light up something like cocos?

or, are there natural coal users (cocos, lump, or otherwise) that use ql's on occasion and can't taste too much of a difference? personally, i was thinking something like john's ql's.

TIA

Just wish the coils were closer together so they will light faster but tired of replacing my stove one cause it's more expensive than one of these.

i have one of those for use at home. we're going to be outside aka no outlet. and i think a propane camping stove would be too bulky to take on the trip.

Grab yourself some quality japanese coals, and use quicklights to light the japanese.

get a lighter....and then go to a local home depot or lowes....pick up a torch. Should work just fine.

Better, suggestion so +1

couldn't i just light some legit japanese with a lighter instead of wasting the ql's to light them?

Nuff Said. This thing gets Coco's blazing hot in under 5min. Usually right around the 4min mark when set on high. I've already gone through 2 boxes of coals on one tank, and still going strong. It can't be used inside though since it uses propane, which produces co2 and can produce co. But for outside use, its awesome. Oh and we have also used it to cook up some glazed peaches to go with some SB White Peach one night, so its a win win stove, and i got it at walmart for $22.

i have one of those, but prefer my electric stove, but i think i'm just gonna do natural coals and just bring that stove. i usually just strategically leaned the cocos up so that the flame from the heating element would hit it. but i think i have to find a small grate to put over the stove to light these bad boys more efficiently. any ideas on that grate?

if you have a traditional coal holder you can use to light coals...its like a holder with a grate on the bottom. (there are holes on the bottom). Or you can use the metal grate from the fan of a power supply. I believe mattarios mentioned it before, I have used a grate like that and it works wonderful.

Oh and that is to use with the propane stove. Edited by srawas89

The silver-tab style semi-quick lighting coals have always been a good smoking experience for me. Not as nasty/harsh as the quicklights. I just bought some a few days ago, waiting for them to arrive.

This survived many a drunk and many a sober camping trip for hookah:

"doubles" as a small camp stove biggrin.gif

~30-45 bucks, depending on your store, fuel last quite a while due to its small size at $3.

Edit: Used for Exotica's and coco's, QL's just need a lighter anyway, but should still be glowing red when placed on yer hookah. Edited by redjako

Those tongs are adjustable...cut your piece, and move the tongs in so it holds the coal...easy peazy. I placed that sucker in a large bowl indoors, and outdoors, just keep it on dirt away from the fire.

The actual Pocket Rocket folds up to ~3" tall, 1.5" wide, if that wide at all.

i use more than one piece of coal at a time...how would this thing operate? is it the wonder burner!? laugh.gif
but seriously, were you lighting one piece at a time? that's nuts that it's so tiny.

can you fit 3 pieces of coal on there at a time? i usually use four cocos for nak.

cool idea and all but i don't think that i'm gonna blow 30-40 bucks just for this one trip. i'll probably use the aforementioned coleman burner that i already own and snag a screen/grate for it.
